Come experience some draft horse magic with the newest (and biggest!) members of the River’s Bend herd. Whether you are looking for a unique adventure that is fun for the whole family, or want to rent out the Belgian Draft Horse team for your next special event, we want to create unique and memorable experiences for people by sharing these special animals.

Our most popular event. Take a ride around the ranch on a horse drawn sleigh while you cozy up under some blankets and sip on your favorite hot beverage. After the ride, we will meet you in the orchard under the walled tent where we will have a fire going, chestnuts roasting, and a home cooked meal waiting for you.
*Coffee, cider and hot cocoa included with the ride. Spiced wine, hot toddys and other alcoholic beverages must be requested in advanced at the time of booking.

Meet the Team
Hazel and Basil are two Belgian mares who are as sweet as their names sound. We added them to the River’s Bend herd in 2020 after purchasing them at an Amish sale in Iowa. They were started on an Amish farm and have worked sleighs their whole life, so their commands are also in Pennsylvania Dutch. Hazel is 16 years old and takes the lead position on the left, while her full sister Basil (15) takes on the right side pulling. They are gentle giants and have the sweetest presence!
History of the Belgian Draft Horse
Belgian draft horses originated in the Brabant region of modern day Belgium. They are one of the strongest heavy breeds. On average they weigh around 2,000 pounds. They are still used as working horses and can pull a tremendous amount of weight. In fact, at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO they had a team of Belgians pull a weight of 17,000 pounds the distance of 7 feet and 2 inches!
